FFLiveWire Exclusive Interview with Brian Johnston

Gardner-Webb defensive end Brian Johnston took the time to sit down and answer some questions with FFLiveWire's Luke Nicholson about overcoming adversity, his NFL aspirations, and his college career.

Luke Nicholson: Who is your biggest role model? Why?

Brian Johnston: Both of my parents are my biggest role models because they constantly inspire me to be the best I can be.

Luke Nicholson: What is your greatest football moment to date?

Brian Johnston: Beating a highly ranked team in overtime my freshman year and being named defensive player of the week.

Luke Nicholson: Is there a situation in your past where you overcame adversity? How did you do it and how has it made you a better person?

Brian Johnston: I have been overcoming adversity my whole life because I grew up with nothing, been living paycheck to paycheck and have been working so hard for the chance to be able to help my family financially while doing something I love.

Luke Nicholson: What sports did you participate in during high school and how have they helped you to become a better player on the football field?

Brian Johnston: I threw the shot and discus in high school and that helped me a lot with my balance and strength.

Luke Nicholson: What did you gain from your experience at the Hula Bowl?

Brian Johnston: The reassurance to myself that I could dominate against D1-A athletes, and I met some real interesting people.

Luke Nicholson: You have played both defensive end and outside linebacker at Gardner-Webb. How has this versatility helped you as a player?

Brian Johnston: This helped me in my coverage skills and also helped me with me speed and quickness.

Luke Nicholson: Who is the best player you have faced during your career?

Brian Johnston: Jerome Mathis (Hampton)

Luke Nicholson: If you could have any super power, what would you choose? Why?

Brian Johnston: The ability to turn hate into love.

Luke Nicholson: What one thing do you have to work on the most to excel at the NFL level?

Brian Johnston: Adjusting to the speed of the game.

Luke Nicholson: What current NFL player does your game most resemble?

Brian Johnston: Patrick Kerney because he can beat you with speed or power.

Luke Nicholson: What are you doing to prepare for your Pro Day?

Brian Johnston: Training twice a day, 4 times a week with one of the best trainers in the country (Todd Durkin).

Luke Nicholson: Which teams have expressed interest in you at this point?

Brian Johnston: Mostly all the teams that run a 3-4 scheme and some of the teams that run a 4-3 scheme.

Luke Nicholson: Is there a specific team you hope to play for?

Brian Johnston: I’m a hometown boy so I’d love to play for the Chargers.

Luke Nicholson: Are you a cat or a dog? Why?

Brian Johnston: A dog because I’m allergic to cats.

Luke Nicholson: Outside of football, what are some of your hobbies?

Brian Johnston: Playing pool, bowling, fishing, playing video games, and hanging out with the family and friends.

Luke Nicholson: Why should a NFL team select you over other defensive ends in this draft?

Brian Johnston: Because I am just as good at the run as I am at the pass and my motor never stops. I don’t have a big school pushing my name out there; it’s just me and my god given abilities

Luke Nicholson: What are your plans for your career after football?

Brian Johnston: I want to coach high school football so I can mentor these young kids in the most influential part of their lives.

Luke Nicholson: If you could sack any NFL quarterback, who would you choose? Why?

Brian Johnston: Eli Manning because he didn’t want to come to San Diego.

Luke Nicholson: Finish the following sentence: Brian Johnston is tougher than…

Brian Johnston: any defensive end coming out this year!

Luke Nicholson: Thank you for your time, Brian. The staff at FFLiveWire wishes you the best of luck in all of your NFL endeavors.
